Wealthier Than The Mind Suggests

Short Musing #3

In a culture obsessed with the future we often forget to look around us and see what’s really there. In the midst of our constant chase for more, we forget the wealth we already have. Our perception shapes our reality. Life happens now, in this very moment, and tomorrow does not yet exist, except in our minds. We’d know that we are truly rich if we bothered to look at the everyday evidence that supports it.

Did you know that the mind visually fills-in the “gaps” in our vision? It’s a concept called “perceptual filling-in.” It’s the conclusion made based on several studies that suggest that the mind sees, at least in part, what it wants to see. Since we live within the confines of our minds and repeat habitual thoughts, the blessings that surround us often may not register. What thoughts do you repeat on a daily basis that may be altering your perception of the world?

Unless we seek beauty, we won’t find it. I can’t remember the last time I saw a stranger smelling roses. Seeking beauty is different than chasing it. A better way to put it might be to seek “reasons” or evidence that beauty exists around us. There is so much that makes life beautiful — Family and friends, a roof over our heads, cozy little forest creatures, the sun that warms the Earth, and the oxygen we can breathe. No matter who you are, it’s guaranteed you’ll have something to appreciate — something that makes your life rich with beauty. Now, it all depends on what you seek.
