Short Musing #3

It may seem un-profound to write something as mundane as a to-do list. However, I’d like to argue that there is immense power within this simple action, should we choose to use it wisely. This power, is the power of intent. It’s what can rescue us from the sometimes overwhelming currents of life

No one likes the feeling that comes from having too many tasks on one’s plate. It can happen for a number of reasons, some more common than others. Perhaps saying “yes” too often, is one. There’s a good saying that goes something like, “Don’t let you mouth overload your back.” I first heard it from a Jim Rohn recording and I think it’s excellent advice for anyone who tends to accept too many requests from too many people. However, no matter how the mountain of responsibilities is formed, the underlying solution remains the same.

Writing is the act of giving form to ideas. It doesn’t do anyone any good to spiral into a negative frenzy of regurgitating thoughts. Writing down a thought, stops it from moving, making it still enough to be observed, helping us view a situation more objectively. It, then, creates a gap where conscious decisions can be made. Once a new plan is formed, the mind calms.

Conscious intention, when wielded wisely can be the most powerful tool. Writing merely paves the path to that opportunity (though in my opinion, it’s one of the best ways to that end). However, intent is what gives true peace of mind.
