Sacrifice in the Name Of…?

Sometimes we forget to ask the most fundamental questions until it’s too late. Today, a member of my accountability group described feeling burnout after putting in 14-hour days of back-to-back focused studying to get a job. After all, competition can be fierce in certain occupations.

It’s not wise to walk a path without first knowing where it leads. If it’s not a passionate pursuit, then the days spent in toil may result in an empty and unfulfilling life. On the other hand, pursuing a passion aligned with one’s values, promises a worthwhile adventure. Sacrifice in vain is the tragedy that can unfold when we forget to ask these deeper questions.

If something requires great sacrifice on our part, we must ask ourselves this: If reaching the end-result was guaranteed, would it be worth it? If the answer is no, then this simple question can save precious time and effort that could be invested into something truly meaningful. That’s not to say, we need to be absolutely sure of how our journey will unfold before venturing into something new. However, it proves valuable to ask, in case there is something else we’d rather be moving towards.

Sacrifice becomes easier to handle with a strong conviction, and faith that hard work will be rewarded. Asking the right questions will help us stay aware of how we feel and where we’re headed. It may even aid in uncovering our true passions in life, so don’t forget to revisit the fundamentals from time to time.
